What Is Unlocks?
In the GSM market, network operators, who generally sell phones at a lower price than cost in order to attract customers, try to stop them from leaving for another company by ulocking the phone for exclusive activation on their network. As a result, many cell phone owners are stuck with a phone they paid for but that can't be used on another network.
Unlocking is an extremely easy concept to explain, sort of . Unless stated otherwise, cell phones purchased from carrier retail stores are “locked” to that specific carrier.
Now, is it legal or illegal? Rumor has it that it is illegal but common sense would suggest, however, that no company should be allowed to stop consumers from doing what they want with a device that they have purchased. A large network operator once told, too, that it might even be illegal for network operators to actually lock phones!
How Does It Work?
Purchasing a code for your phone couldn't be easier. Supply a few details about the phone (make, model, IMEI etc.) and complete the appropriate 'Code Request', then submit the appropriate payment via the payment system. In most cases your code is delivered to your email address or sms within 5 minutes.
What Mobile Phones Are Supported?
I specialise in codes for BlackBerry mobile phones, however we currently supply codes for many Alcatel, Huawei, ZTE and many more mobile phone, wifi router and modem . The list of supported models is updated on a regular basis. I aim to have the ability to provide codes for many more mobile phone makes in the near future.
So what do you do if you want to purchase a phone you like but use it with a different carrier, perhaps one that costs less or gets better reception in your area.
Hardware Unlock Vs. Software Unlock
Technically, there are 2 ways to go about unlocking your Phone. There is a hardware unlock, which is invasive (you have to open the phone), that I don’t recommend that anyone tries unless they’ve got a pretty extensive background in some kind of electrical engineering.
The 2nd, much easier way, the software unlock,Just like jailbreaking, this can be as easy as hooking your iPhone up to the computer and clicking ‘start’. However the requirements for unlocking and the rules you must follow are very different.
Things to Consider Before Unlocking
There are guidelines to follow when thinking about unlocking your Phone.
First off you need to make sure that the carrier you are wishing to go to supports the Phones technology. If you unlock, really your best option is the other major wireless GSM carrier. Other, smaller CDMA carriers.
Secondly, you need to know your firmware version and modem firmware version,Imei number (or baseband as its often referred to). This is easily discovered by popping into your Phone settings and opening the ‘about’ window.
